Tax Credit Available For Propane Used In Forklifts

A generous federal tax credit offered to those using propane in forklifts and other motor vehicles expired at the end of 2009, but those eligible may still claim the credit, at 50 cents per gallon of propane used, for calendar years 2007, 2008, and 2009.  A two-step process is necessary.  Users must first register as alternative fuel users with the Internal Revenue Service on IRS Form 637, and, once they receive a registration number, may file for the credit on IRS Form 4136.  Claimants must have records to support their claims for propane purchases for use in forklifts. It is possible that Congress may yet extend the propane credit beyond the end of 2009, but this is still uncertain. Source: ATA
